On Saturday, October 1, 2016, a new initiative known as the White Bear Lake Area Senior Housing Awareness Day will be happening in the local community. This event is held in collaboration with the White Bear Area Senior Program, local senior living communities, business groups, and municipalities served by the White Bear Lake Area School District.
The goal of the day is to create increased awareness of senior housing options in the community. The day will consist of open houses at a various senior living communities in White Bear Lake, Vadnais Heights, North Oaks, Maplewood, Mahtomedi, Shoreview and Hugo. There will be a FREE Bus tour, with transportation provided by NewTrax, originating from the White Bear Area Senior Center along with a Senior Housing Options Resource Room and Orientation Events. This day will be followed by educational events throughout the month of October. Press Publications will be the media partner and help promote activities surrounding the day.
By year 2020, the State of Minnesota will have more people over the age of 65 than school-aged children. The White Bear Lake Area School District is already there with more than 10,000 seniors and almost 9,000 students currently enrolled. Last fall, the Community Services Advisory Council of the White Bear Lake Area Schools initiated a community engagement process regarding senior issues in the White Bear Area. It led to an on-going community forum, completion of a resident phone survey, creation of action teams and the generation of a number of actionable items to work toward a more age-friendly community. One of these action items is to build awareness of Senior Housing options in the White Bear Area that allow our neighbors to stay in their community.
Additional information about housing tour stops, open house activities, and other events will be available soon. For questions about this event, please contact White Bear Lake Area Schools Senior Programs Coordinator Tara Jebens-Singh at [email protected].
